Jarrow Investments Limited today welcomed the announcement that its proposed Hanley Grange development in Hinxton, South Cambridgeshire has been selected as one of the locations short-listed for the Government’s eco-towns programme.

Chosen from 57 development proposals submitted to the Communities and Local Government department, Hanley Grange has been confirmed as one of fifteen potential sites for new sustainable, zero carbon developments which can help to meet the Government’s priority objective of three million new houses by 2020 while also achieving the highest environmental and design standards.

Jarrow Investments has been promoting the site for a number of years. The opportunity to bid for eco-town status in October last year provided a chance to confirm Hanley Grange’s status as an exemplar of sustainable development.

The proposals at Hanley Grange include at least 8,000 new homes, up to 3,000 of which will be affordable housing, along with a secondary school, up to five primary schools, a health centre and a range of community facilities, shops and public spaces. All of the social and physical infrastructure for the scheme will be delivered at no cost to taxpayers.

While Hanley Grange has excellent access to the A505, the A11 and the M11, a central focus of the transport strategy will be to encourage people not to use their cars. This will be achieved through a number of measures, including locating houses close to supporting facilities and delivering a bus network linking areas of employment, railway stations and surrounding communities such as Cambridge.

As part of the eco-town bid, Jarrow Investments is committed to ensuring the development is zero-carbon and will include environmental management systems dedicated to reducing household carbon emissions.

The scheme is located within the South Cambridgeshire high technology cluster which is vital to job creation throughout the region and the UK. Hanley Grange will provide much needed new housing for the cluster and ensure employees can live near their workplace, further reducing the need to travel by car. The proposals will also provide hundreds of jobs for local people living in the settlement.

Bob Sellwood, from the project’s planning consultants Sellwood Planning, commented: “We are delighted that the Government has confirmed Hanley Grange as one of its short-listed eco-towns. Our proposed development is a compelling example of how to deliver low carbon and affordable housing supported by appropriate infrastructure.

“Jarrow Investments will continue to work with its partners to develop one of the most exciting projects in the country. The project has been in progress for a number of years so we will be closely reviewing the detail of the government’s decision. However, by short-listing Hanley Grange for potential eco-town status, the Government has confirmed that our proposals meet all the criteria for developing an ecologically sustainable community that will set the standard for future development across the UK. Any plans that are now advanced will be done so in close consultation with local people to ensure that the project is fully integrated with the surrounding communities.”

The short-list of 15 will be reduced to 10 by the Communities and Local Government department following consultations with the local community and other stakeholders.
