HANLEY GRANGE MASTERPLAN PUBLISHED

Details of how a new environmentally friendly community in South Cambridgeshire could look have been released following the publication of the Hanley Grange illustrative masterplan.

In a submission to the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Hanley Grange project team has set out details of the scheme including a plan which shows the location of homes, schools, shops and public spaces in Hanley Grange. A schedule indicating the proposed allocation of land between various uses has also been published.

All the shortlisted eco-towns have been asked to confirm by the end of July the scheme which should go forward for comparative assessment. The Hanley Grange scheme is confirmed as providing approximately 6,700 homes and 2,700 jobs on 264 hectares of land.

At its heart is a new town centre with a mix of community facilities, shops, employment areas, restaurants, cafes, a bus interchange and central park. A secondary school is located nearby and to the north and south there are two smaller centres to ensure there are convenient shops, community facilities and primary schools for residents.

Hanley Grange will feature new wetlands and ecological areas to the west, with green spaces and pedestrian routes throughout. New bus services will be provided and an express service will link Hanley Grange to the southern end of the Cambridge Guided Bus network. The proposals also include a new direct bus and cycle link to Whittlesford Parkway station under the A505/A1301 roundabout.

Nick West, Project Director for Hanley Grange, said: “This is an important milestone in the Hanley Grange project. Our proposals have been developed following a wide-ranging consultation with government departments and local organisations along with nearby residents. The plan integrates social, economic and environmental elements to ensure the development is supported by the physical infrastructure required for an eco-town.

“The masterplan brings to life our vision of an exemplar environmentally sustainable community. It is focussed on how people want to live and provides the community facilities they need close to their homes. The plan provides a clear blueprint for developing communities in the future and will deliver an eco-town which successive generations can be proud of.”
